Chapter 88 Sir Jane
Chapter 88 Sir Jane
Jane spun around in mid-air and looked at Shinzo, who was kneeling on one knee.
"(✧≖‿≖) Since that big idiot isn't here, let the great Lady Jane take over the divine support from now on!"
Having said that, she mobilized her stored divine power, and a dazzling light burst forth, shooting straight into the fog of war ahead.
The divine power was not enough to completely negate the concealment effect left by Su Cheng, but it did briefly tear open a gap, illuminating an area below the city wall.
As the light shone, the Xinzu people were able to see the scene below.
The dire wolf pack had already silently crept up to within inches of the city gate; they had begun their first probing attack.
"Fire!" Shinzo shouted.
The archer immediately released the bowstring, and a dense rain of arrows whistled through the open space in front of him.
Startled, the dire wolves quickly retreated and disappeared back into the depths of the mist.
Even after repelling the enemy, the defenders on the city wall still felt a sense of dread. Thanks to the blessing, these enormous beasts were able to become almost invisible, making no sound whatsoever, completely overturning ordinary people's understanding of large carnivorous animals.
Jane was also startled by the dense swarm of wolf heads below the city. The metal box stumbled backward in mid-air, crashing directly into the arms of the fully armored warrior behind her.
The fully armored warrior reached out and steadied her.
Watching the beasts retreat into the thick fog, Jane floated back into the air.
"<( ̄︶ ̄)> Did you see that? If it weren't for Lord Jian's timely intervention, you would have been in serious trouble." She boasted smugly, "Praise the great Lord Jian!"
Jane, overjoyed at her success, floated into the air, beaming with pride.
The Porsche emblem overhead gleamed in the sunlight.
"All troops, listen up! Move your positions five meters to the left! Quickly!"
The warriors of the Soul Clan exchanged bewildered glances. Faced with this meaningless order to move from the city wall, none dared to make a move.
Even if the person who issued the order was the greatest messenger of the Salmon Clan.
The fully armored swordsman standing behind her finally couldn't stand it any longer. He stepped forward, stretched out his hands covered in metal armor, grabbed the iron box in mid-air, and turned to walk down the city wall.
"Xin'an, I am the messenger of the gods! Don't interrupt me!" Jane struggled restlessly in the swordsman's arms, her protests carrying far down the steps.
Shinzo watched the two figures leave, feeling somewhat helpless.
The messenger of the salaryman seems to be getting more and more childlike.
I don't know if it's good or bad.
However, the enemy they are currently facing is quite troublesome.
Xin Zang withdrew his gaze and looked again at the thick fog rolling outside the city walls.
Even with the fire in his heart, he couldn't sense the approaching beasts at such close range.
Ordinary Soul Clan warriors, even those of extraordinary abilities, would probably not be able to effectively combat them.
We must keep the night watchmen on high alert.
The wolves' patience won't last long; they will surely return, and the divine messenger may not be able to provide the next round of support in time.
"Keep patrolling!" Shinzo drew his long sword from his waist, his voice echoing across the defensive line. "Everyone, be on high alert!"
And high in the sky.
A cheap-looking plastic square table appeared between two chairs, and then a deck of playing cards with a brand-new, coated finish was placed on the table.
Su Cheng leaned forward, skillfully took the cards, and shuffled them with one hand. The cards flew between his fingers, his movements incredibly fluid.
But the fact that the fog had just been briefly dispelled still made his eyebrows twitch.
"Is your strategist also a Dire Wolf?" Liang Jiu asked casually as he watched him shuffle the cards.
"It's an old wolf that's lived a long time. Its physical strength has declined, but its mind is still sharp." Su Cheng placed the shuffled cards in the center of the table. "To teach me how to count cards, it even learned to draw numbers in the mud with its paws."
The two began drawing cards with perfect understanding.
Who would have thought that the gods who would decide the outcome of the final battle were currently playing poker high above the clouds? And beneath their feet, a battle for the survival of the divine realm was unfolding, a battle of life and death.
The atmosphere on the city wall below grew increasingly somber.
Several simple catapults were pushed to the edge of the city wall. The wooden mechanisms tightened, emitting a sour, grinding sound.
Following Xin Zang's orders, his subordinates piled the foul-smelling animal entrails, discarded leather, and various kinds of garbage into the thrown nets. The pungent smell of blood and decay quickly filled the city walls.
"Commander, are we really going to drop these?" A squad leader covered his nose, clearly confused by the type of shell.
Shinzo looked down at the thick fog churning below.
"The divine messenger just dispelled the fog, but that's not a long-term solution," Xin Zang calmly explained. "They are terrifying, born predators, but that doesn't change their wild animal instincts."
He pointed to the internal organs inside the catapult.
"Wild animals have a much more acute sense of smell than humans. They are more sensitive to the smell of blood, and their inner desires are much stronger. Throwing these highly rotten and fermented things into the fog will disrupt their olfactory network with its chaotic and pungent odors. In the fog, their vision is also impaired. Without their sense of smell, they may not have better eyesight than us."
The subordinate suddenly realized.
Xin Zang didn't say anything more, raised his hand, and swung it down heavily.
"emission."
The ropes securing the mechanism were cut.
With a series of muffled ejection sounds, several huge packages filled with entrails and waste flew over the city wall, tracing parabolic arcs in mid-air before crashing into the unknown white mist ahead.
The dull thuds of heavy objects hitting the ground came one after another.
The warriors of the Spirit Clan on the city wall held their breath, pricked up their ears, and gripped their weapons rigidly.
A few seconds later.
From the once silent depths of the thick fog came the sickening sounds of tearing and low growls. The colossal creatures were issuing protective warnings as they fought for flesh.
The trap worked.
But that's far too easy.
The sounds of fighting deep within the fog gradually subsided, and for a long time afterward, the dire wolves indeed refrained from launching any further probing or attacks on the city walls. An unusual silence fell over the front lines.
But Shinzo did not loosen his grip on the long blade; instead, his inner unease grew stronger.
He turned to look at his subordinate beside him.
When will the next batch of supplies arrive?
"Based on the distance, the transport team behind us will have about two more days."
Xin Cang pondered for a moment.
"Go and summon the priest, Xinwu. Have him protect the grain convoy and ensure its safety."
