Chapter 1209 - 826: Training Camp (2)
And then there were some clusters of buildings, these were various classrooms, some were even experimental units. The air is mixed with the unique smell of steel, sweat, and alchemy materials.
In the distance, the towering black tower of the Tower of Trial is clearly visible even in the morning mist, serving as the eternal backdrop of the Training Camp.
Just after passing a crossroads, a clear voice was heard: "Adam! Tokke! Good morning!"
Pokanasha, with her silver-white short hair, ran over like a light butterfly, although her height still resembled a ten-year-old child, the well-fitted reservist uniform and armband added a mature touch of a new recruit.
Next to her was Eva, with bright, spirited emerald eyes, topped with a pair of spirited leopard ears, her black tail swaying gently behind her.
The two of them, along with several other female recruits, lived in adjacent dormitory buildings.
"Morning, Pokanasha, Eva." Adam responded gently.
Tokke rubbed his eyes and chuckled.
Flying Squirrel crossed his arms with a sullen expression.
"Oh, honorable Flying Squirrel, how could I have forgotten you.
"Please forgive my oversight, for I mistook you for the air."
Facing the little girl’s joke, Flying Squirrel was already used to it, responding with just a hum.
But this was considered their unique greeting method.
"I heard today’s cultural class is taught by warriors returning from the front line?" Eva asked eagerly, her leopard ears perked up, clearly also anticipating it.
She had grown into a skillful Ranger, especially adept at short-distance quick assaults and stealth.
This perfectly showcased her natural physical talents.
"Yes, the news has spread all around."
Adam nodded, walking alongside the girls on the cobbled path toward the teaching building.
Along the way were other formations of new recruits undergoing morning training, the sounds of commands and synchronized footsteps rising and falling in succession.
A three-person squad passing by them was obviously excitedly discussing as well.
"Hey, did you hear? Today’s class is taught by veterans on rotation from the ’Blood Pit Fortress’!"
"Really? Was it from that big battle not long ago? Even Kana participated in that one?"
"Definitely! Veterans just back from the front line! More thrilling than any puppet simulation demonstration!"
"Hope they speak more about real battle cases, I’ve heard that demons there carry an entirely different oppressive aura than what’s shown in books..."
This is the New Recruit Training Camp.
They are all Night Watchers, so they can access information from the outside world through channels.
Information within the Abyss is not a secret to Night Watchers and can be mutual exchanges.
If even the channels don’t allow disclosure of information about the Abyss, those Night Watchers stationed inside the Abyss would lack a channel to relieve their emotions.
This also allows other Night Watchers to prepare themselves.
Another recruit interjected: "My brother has a friend in the Logistics Department, said those warriors returning from the Abyss reek of sulfur and blood from ten meters away! Their eyes are particularly terrifying..."
Listening to the buzz of discussions around them, feeling the air filled with excitement and awe, even the usually composed Adam’s heartbeat quickened slightly.
Facing warriors who have seen the Abyss, their experiences are far more valuable than any textbook.
The lecture hall in the teaching building was packed, the atmosphere more solemn and unspeakably excited than usual.
When a stern-faced, newly scarred Human warrior, seemingly from a sharp claw, took long strides to the podium, all the chatter quieted instantly.
The blood and fire crest on his epaulettes clearly indicated his origin — Blood Pit Fortress.
The faint scent around him also indicated he had been in the Abyss for a prolonged period and had just recently rotated out.
He didn’t bother with small talk, his cold gray-blue eyes swept across the audience, his voice hoarse yet powerful.
"Today, no history, no dry conceptual models. What I’m showing you is the most authentic filth and deadliest mistakes on the Abyss Battlefield!"
Before the words fell, the massive magic crystal screen behind him lit up, no longer showing benign illustrations but real, post-processed blurry battlefield footage.
The distorted, writhing Inferior Demon horde, the Frenzy Demons wielding burning chain hammers, and the cunning Quase Demons lurking in the shadows...
The images, accompanied by piercing screeches, demonic roars, and the rumble of spells, assaulted the senses of the recruits.
"... Look here! This unassuming Timid Demon, you think it only steals from the edges?"
The instructor pointed at an ugly little demon on the screen that was crouched over, "In the rear chaos, a Timid Demon’s self-destructive release of concentrated toxin threw an entire squad into a state of Chaos, leading to this squad suffering large-scale casualties and rendering the remaining members incapable of further combat.
A squad of Night Watchers was thus lost on the front line, despite their average level being a full Level Eight.
Any thought of underestimating them is writing your epitaph in your own blood!"
The classroom echoed with the sound of gasps.
Because they all somewhat looked down on these minor demons, considering them the weakest.
When the scene switched to a large demon covered in continually writhing tumors, emitting weird green mist, even the instructor’s gaze grew heavier.
"This is a special Venom Messenger..." a deep voice, carrying some peculiar rhythm, suddenly resounded, not loud, yet clearly reaching each of the new recruits in the front rows.
Everyone, including the instructor on stage, turned to the source of the voice — it was Flying Squirrel.
His scarlet eyes were fixed on the screen, his expression unprecedentedly solemn, even with a trace of... disgust?
That wasn’t an exaggerated performance but a nearly instinctive rejection.
"What they spew isn’t mere poisonous mist," Flying Squirrel’s voice was steady, devoid of the usual dramatic flair.
"That’s a highly condensed, Abyss-blessed desecration plague. Any flesh contact will suffer an irreversible rotting curse, the soul dragged into a slow and eternal swamp of agony.
"Physical defense is nearly ineffective, only the pure blaze of high temperature or the burning of Order’s radiance can contain its spread temporarily... On the battlefield, they aren’t vanguards, but... sowers of corruption and despair."
The once stern face of the instructor showed a flash of surprise.
He looked at the young Blood Race recruit in a somewhat worn cloak, nodding slowly: "... Kid, well said. Very detailed."
He seemed unsurprised by Flying Squirrel’s performance, as were the surrounding recruits who were used to it.
He then faced all the recruits, "This is precisely what I want to emphasize! The pollution of these disgusting things is ten times more threatening than their claws!
"Don’t think about resisting, when you see them appear, move away and report as a priority before Purification units arrive! Any contamination must be isolated and purified at all costs!"
After receiving affirmation from the instructor, Flying Squirrel slightly raised his chin, the familiar "superior" expression seemed to want to return, but seeing Adam’s calm gaze, he just snorted, sitting up straight again.
Tokke beside him widened his eyes and whispered: "Hey, you going above and beyond today, huh, Mr. Arrogance?"
In Adam’s eyes, there was a hint of deeper meaning.
This Flying Squirrel guy, sure enough, has quite a few things up his sleeve.
He knew Flying Squirrel occasionally gathered information about the Abyss comprehensively, meticulously organizing and recording it in the dormitory for detailed study.
Sometimes he could even get first-hand information because Flying Squirrel frequently followed the channels, reportedly forming a special group with some Night Watchers to specifically discuss these matters.
When did it start?
It seemed to be from the very beginning.
Adam suddenly remembered, Flying Squirrel never explained why he ended up in the orphanage.
Even as a child, he never mentioned it.
Looks like the answer is clear now.
The course continued, and this time, all the recruits were wholly focused.
But courses are always short-lived.
